Advent in Zagreb

It is said to be the best Advent destination in Europe in 2016. I don't know whether it is true or not, but in December Zagreb is definitely transformed into a fairyland. A fairyland of Christmas lights, Christmas trees, stands from which the smell of mulled wine, fritule (a kind of doughnuts) and other delicious fried food is spread, all complemented by cheerful melodies of Christmas songs. It is definitely a joyful time when people somehow feel happier, more alive, more enthusiastic to go out, meet friends and share happy moments.

Is Zagreb beautiful? It definitely is. On its many squares and street corners there is live music and the queues of people are flowing down its streets...

What are the places not to be missed? The first, I would say, is the Ice Park on King Tomislav Square. There you can enjoy ice skating with the view of the magnificent park, fountain and beautiful building of the Art Pavilion or you can eat and drink on many stands. The site is mind blowing and the atmosphere is spectacular.

If you go from there to the main square you will come across Zrinjevac park with its music pavilion where almost every evening there is live music and, of course, food and drinks and different craft stands. A few hundred year old plane trees and beautiful old fountains are decorated with Christmas lights. The atmosphere is joyfull and festive.

The Ban Jelačić square has the charm of its own with its main stage Christmas programme, its taverns and patisseries and a Christmas fair called Zagreb Christmas Wonderland. From there the Christmas fair continues to the European square and the new „it“ place - Kurelčeva street where you can try many different world cuisines.

For the full Christmas experience you should visit the Zagreb Cathedral and the Christmas nativity scenes. We should also mention Gajeva street, Bogovićeva street and ''Fuliranje'' at Tomićeva street with a variety of food, drinks and souvenirs...
