Makarska Riviera / Brela Tourist Board

We can definitely say that Makarska Riviera is one of the most beautiful parts of the Croatian coast with around sixty kilometres of breathtaking white pebble beaches bordered on one side with the crystal blue clear sea and on the other side with the green belt of pine trees above which rises the magnificent mountain Biokovo. The Riviera is settled fifty kilometres south of Split and a hundred kilometres north of Dubrovnik and is one of the sunniest and warmest places in Croatia.  The largest place is Makarska and other popular places are Brela, Baška Voda, Tučepi, Podgora etc. They are former fisherman villages and nowdays mainly  tourism oriented.

The city of Makarska grew around a natural harbor protected by a picturesque peninsula of Sveti Petar (St. Peter) and the cape Osejava. It is the only harbour of this kind between the mouth of the Cetina and Neretva rivers. In the past it provided protection during stormy weather to sailors, pirates and merchants, and nowadays it does the same for yachts, sailing boats and tourist ships. To this day, Makarska is known for its sandy beach, which is almost two kilometres long, where you can take part in lot of sports and entertainment activities, but as well for its vivid night life. As a cultural centre it offers you the opportunity to enjoy visiting museums, galleries and churches.

The best way to become familiar with the history of this town is by visiting the Franciscan monastery which recently celebrated its 500th anniversary. The monastery boasts a picture gallery, library, one of a kind Malacological museum, dedicated to the study and preservation of mollusks, and the Institute of Mountains and Sea. The city museum can be found on the waterfront, as well as the church of St. Filip. The renovated church of St. Petar is located in the St. Petar park, a spot with a beautiful view of the city, magnificent Mount Biokovo and the open sea.

The other place that stands out for its beauty is Brela situated on the north of the Riviera. Brela is mostly famous for its beach Punta Rata (or Dugi rat), one of the most beautiful pebble beaches of the world situated in a protected area, a cape covered in pine forest. In July 2004, the American Forbes magazine listed this beach among the 10 most beautiful beaches in the world. In 2014 The Huffington Post website described Brela as dream destination and a perfect reason to get on a plane to Croatia as soon as possible.

On the Western side of the beach there is the Brela Stone – a symbol of Brela, the most common motive from postcards of Brela and Croatia. The rock is covered in pines proudly protruding and presenting all its beauty and force, power and spite to grow from stone.

We cannot describe Makarska riviera without mentioning mountain Biokovo once more. Today Biokovo mountain is a nature park, excursion site with many marked mountaineers paths, unique plant life and numerous animal species such as wolf, chamois and mouflon. It presents a unique contrast from two thousand metres high snow peaks to the peaceful coastline. It only takes a half an hour drive through the nature park to reach the peaks with an unforgettable view of the Riviera and the surrounding islands. At the foot of Biokovo mountain a few picturesque old villages are settled. Villages were deserted after the inhabitants move closer towards the sea but nowdays they are recognized for its beauty and are partly restored.
